这是汉译中使用的借意字，组成的佛教用词很多，如色法、色界、色蕴等，巴利语是（rūpa）。

在古代的时候是不会与现代意义的“色欲”字义混淆的，那个是近代以后的用法，在古代，色的本意就是眼所见之事物，《说文解字》说“颜气也。从人从卪。凡色之属皆从色”，用现代话讲就是物体通过视觉而产生的印象。

借用在佛教中翻译，也是从这个原来佛教词汇的本意去说的，也就是说本意是指物质的认知。在《阿毗达摩论》的讲解中说：

色，巴利叫作( rūpa )。它源于动词（ruppati），意思是变坏、破坏、压破、逼迫、干扰。为什么要用色这个词呢？不直接用“物”呢？用物质的物呢？因为如果是用物的话，它并不能够表达原来巴利的这种意思。这里讲到的色，它并不是我们说到的颜色的色，也不是讲到女色的色。而是指物质的颜色以及物质的现象。

从点看出，颜色以及现象，这不正是《说文》中对“色”这个字的本来解释吗？
