但大部分参观者并没有意识到“隔都”这个词源自对英文ghetto的音译，而追溯词源，则与威尼斯水城息息相关。肖·巴茨教授介绍，其实，隔都（ghetto）这一词汇的出现，源于500年前威尼斯颁发的一个法令。原来，早在11世纪初，意大利威尼斯就有犹太人居住。
