《赢在单词》一书指出：词汇、语音和语法是构成语言的三大要素。其中，词汇是思维概念的基本单位，也是语言的基本构成单位，掌握好一门语言首先必须掌握一定量的词汇。如何学好英语单词，能够以较少的精力、较快的速度、较好的效果来大量识记英语单词，迅速扩大词汇量，这与有效的学习方法有密切关系。

1．后缀的基本含义：

后缀 (suffix) 是加缀在词干或词根后的词缀。后缀一般不改变词的含义，只是转变它的词类 (即词性)，作用与前缀正好相反。后缀在构词中也具有一定的含义与作用，懂得了后缀的含义，就容易了解由后缀和词根结合而成为单词的意义。英语的后缀往往还起着区分词类的作用，一定的后缀除了表示一定的意义之外，还表示一定的词类。后缀不仅是构成新词的手段，而且也是形成各种词类的手段。另外，它与前缀一样，原来都是独立的词或词根，由于经常缀在别的单词或词根的后面使用，辅助中心意义，时间久了，就失去其独立性，而成为附加成分了。

2．后缀主要有以下几个基本特点：

（1）拼写基本不变；

（2）发音基本固定；

（3）所代表的词性基本不变。

3．学习前缀、后缀和词根时，我们还应注意的问题？

在现代英语里，还有一部分构词成分，它们还没有完全失去独立性。有关这些构词成分究竟是作词根还是作前缀、后缀，各家说法不一，所以在后面解说前缀、后缀和词根时，可能出现这样一种情况，就是同一构词成分可能出现在这三种构词要素的两个里面，或三个里面同时出现。当然，在编排过程中，除非此成分特别重要，其他一般情况，为了读者学习方便，就按作者主观意见，使之归属于三种构词要素的其中一种。

在构造一个新词的时候，拉丁语词根可用，希腊语词根也可用。但在构词时，我们应遵守一条原则：同一个词里，词根和前缀必须一致，即必须是同一词源。如果是拉丁语词根，必须用拉丁语前缀；如果是希腊语词根，就必须用希腊语前缀，不能混用。切忌，这种原则也有被打破的情况，但仅是少有的一些词汇。
